MUSK OX, REINDEER AND FISHING- GREENLAND #191

MUSK OX, REINDEER AND FISHING- GREENLAND #191

This outfitter, one of the finest operating on Greenland, offers a choice of two hunting camps for muskox as well as reindeer and native caribou. The first is a cabin camp in West Greenland that is accessed via helicopter from the town of Kangerlussuaq. The second is an upscale, full-service cabin camp reached by boat in South Greenland from the town of Narsarsuaq. Each camp offers abundant wildlife, high success with excellent trophy quality, and unforgettable adventure to a region of the planet few people get the chance to experience.

South Camp
The south camp is arguably the finest camp currently available in Greenland and is an excellent choice for those seeking a higher level of comfort and for those travelling with non-hunting companions. Couples will enjoy their own private cabin with camp amenities including electricity, hot water, sauna, internet (limited), an in-house chef with excellent meals. To reach this camp guests must first fly internationally to Keflavik International Airport (KEF) outside the city of Reykjavik, Iceland. From there they will take a 45 min bus ride into the city to Reykjavik. Flights from Iceland to Greenland may depart from the same international airport outside the city, or they may depart from a second domestic airport inside the city, and this will be determined at the time the tickets are issued. Regardless of airport, the flight to Narsarsuaq Greenland (airport code UAK) is a three and a half hour ride in a twin-engine turbo prop with spectacular views as you descend into the destination. Flights from Iceland to Greenland are expected to be in service twice per week. Exact hunt dates cannot be established for the season until the airline flight schedules are released. Due to the limited number of arriving and departing flights, hunters must choose between a four-night or a longer seven-night itinerary. The outfitter can secure this portion of a client’s ticket with pricing averaging approximately 900 Euros per person, round trip. Guests may also purchase their own tickets at www.airicelandconnect.com. Book early as these seats are limited and sell out every year!

Once in Narsarsuaq clients will be greeted by a member from the outfitter’s staff and transferred to the main camp by boat. An overnight in Narsarsuaq may be required if the flight from Iceland arrives too late in the day for safe passage to camp. This boat ride takes approximately 3 hours and is a wonderful adventure in itself as you pass through ice-filled fjords while viewing glaciers, abundant wildlife while and the splendor of the polar ice cap that can often be seen on the horizon.

THE HUNT: For either species, guiding is conducted on a 2 on 1 ratio. Hunters and their guide(s) will leave camp by boat with travel time ranging from 15 minute to two hours depending on the specific area hunted. If ocean conditions are too rough for safe travel, the day may be used to hunt locations in close proximity to camp or clients may use the time to fish for saltwater cod or arctic char at a late within walking distance from camp. Musk ox and reindeer are commonly found along shorelines, valleys and ridgetops that can often be glassed by boat then stalked by the hunter and guide on foot. Physically, musk ox hunts are easy. Reindeer, introduced into south Greenland many decades ago, often require more physical effort by climbing and hiking, particularly during the months of July and August when many of the bulls are found at higher elevations. Despite relatively short hunt schedules, success rates are near perfect on both species and trophy quality is very high. Reindeer trophies average 300” to 350” SCI with top-end bulls scoring up to 450” taken on past hunts. Muskox hair quality is excellent year-round and a good percentage of the bulls taken here will net higher than the 105” B&C minimum. Reindeer antlers will be fully grown by August and hard-horned around the beginning of September. Additional reindeer can be added to most hunts if time allows. Otherwise, small game hunting for non-exportable arctic fox, hare or ptarmigan (when in season) are included.

In the summer of 2012, at this South location, they erected the first truly proper hunting and fishing camp on the southwest coast of Greenland; being the first ever permanent hunting-and fishing camp in Greenland. A total of twelve sleeping cabins (twin bed) were built around a dining lodge with plenty of room for bigger groups. The dining lodge is equipped with a kitchen, a gas BBQ and a charcoal BBQ. Meals are prepared by the camp chef – most of the menu originates using local fish and game (caribou meat, arctic char and fish from the sea). The camp has running water, normal bathroom facilities, showers, sauna, BBQ and a fully equipped kitchen. All this and still a wilderness camp – equates to a really a unique experience!

What to take and additional considerations:
To avoid the hassle of international travel with a firearm, we recommend renting one of the outfitter’s rifles @ $100 per day used with ammunition. For those who wish to import their own weapon, the outfitter will provide a weapon permit for Iceland and Greenland. Please note that weapon permits cannot be provided for hunters flying through Copenhagen, Denmark.

FISHING
Greenland offers thousands of rivers and lakes – many of which are full of arctic char, but not accessible in every hunting location. Because of the enormous territory and relatively few inhabitants, many of these fishing areas are hardly fished at all. Some rivers have not seen an angler – ever. The fishing is on a voluntary catch and release basis, mostly light tackle fishing. The size of the fish varies from 1-7 lbs.+, and there is plenty of it. The local guides are excellent and know the area extremely well. The lakes and connecting tributaries to the ocean, by clear rivers, provide the best fishing. The fjords are also extremely productive in the early part of the season. Char starts to gather in the fjords near the river mouths in the end of June and begin to move into the rivers in the beginning of July.
The abundance of Arctic char – and the magnificent wild lands and scenery – truly makes this a trip highlight!

Seasons and Dates

The primary season in Greenland is late July through early September and again during the winter/spring months of March and April. Early months of July and August offer the most pleasant weather conditions with daytime temps commonly in the 50 and 60-degree range and rarely freezing at night. Reindeer and caribou bulls remain in velvet this time on year and primarily found in their summering areas at higher elevations and on ridgetops. By late August, arctic char are in full spawning colors and the reindeer begin the annual rut. During the rut, hard-horned bulls can be frequently spotted at lower elevations and long the coastlines. Temperatures often freeze during the nighttime, which help alleviate the mosquitos. Muskox hunting, as well as muskox hair quality, is consistently good throughout the full season.

Trophy Export
After the hunt, trophies are stored in freezing containers where they will remain until October when they are shipped frozen to Denmark or Germany for expediting and any optional taxidermy work per client’s request. Once finished, the trophies will ship by container to the United States (or elsewhere if applicable) for further import processing and shipping to the client’s final destination. The full process takes six months to nine months, on average. UPDATE: For the 2024 season, a new shipping route from Greenland direct to New York is likely available. This new option, once available, will reduce the cost and save time to get trophies to the United States.
