BIG 4 AND PLAINS GAME – MOZAMBIQUE #282

BIG 4 AND PLAINS GAME – MOZAMBIQUE #282

This excellent safari company operates 7 exclusive camps. Each can comfortably accommodate 4-6 clients at a time, as well as have access to other camps throughout the country. Each of the camps has permanent chalets with bathroom and ensuite toilet, with hot and cold running water 24/7. All camps have their own generators and all necessities required to make for a comfortable stay.

All hunt areas are free range – no high fences and no animals have been imported into the area. It is as natural and wild as one can expect to find in Africa today.

Their success on decent male lions is in the region of 80%-90%. The principal PH does most all the lion hunts himself as it is one of his favorites. Lions are generally hunted over bait but they do have a lion caller (large speaker) which they use from time to time depending on movement on baits. They maintain 5 definite resident prides all with dominant males, plus there are some resident lone males (which they obviously target).

The main thing is they get a lot of nomadic males drifting in from the park during the drier months (July- October) so between all this the movement of lion in the area is definitely sufficient. This outfit works very hard to avoid hunting the males from the prides if they have dependent young, along with observing other moral practices. The concentration of leopards is also very good.

Buffalo hunts out of their main area are very good. They also have a joint venture arrangement in Coutada 14, which is a premiere area for buffalo in Mozambique. Nyala, sable and all plains game are in good numbers too.

This safari company has been in operation since 2005 and has become an established name in the safari circles of Mozambique in a relatively short period of time. They hunt over 500,000 acres of hunting areas with varied bush types from thick river forests, to Brachystegia and Miombo woodlands, to huge open grasslands and floodplains with well-maintained camps, many within driving range from the Beira International Airport.

Hunting season starts in April and ends in November because Mozambique’s rainy season is predominantly in January and February and, being fairly flat, the terrain stays wet for a couple of months thereafter.

Clients will clear Mozambique customs at Beira International Airport where the safari company maintains its offices. Clients may need to stay in Beira overnight if they arrive late in the day but generally can travel to camp on the day of arrival. Over the last few years Beira has opened various good quality hotels and accommodation can be arranged with prior notice. Costs range from $150 to $300 per night for a double room.

“Out of this world. We had buffalo and crocodile down in three days, thanks to wonderful PH Richard. Wonderfully relaxed atmosphere in camp. Planning to come back for another hunt, this time with my wife.” W. Birger
