There are a number of terrific safari destinations in Africa, but one stands alone as the “Cadillac of African safaris”, and that is Tanzania. The country abounds in a wide variety of animal and bird life, some found nowhere else in Africa, and offers visitors a chance to witness the spectacle of the migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra and antelope. Many areas remain virtually untouched by humanity and it is still possible to enjoy a traditional East-African tented safari just like the famous hunters of old, like Hemingway, Roosevelt, Selous and Capstick. It is one of the last remaining places that still offers a 21-day “full bag” safari. It is simply an experience without equal.
We are very pleased and privileged to be able to partner with this particular “old school” PH. He has been hunting professionally in Africa for more than 35 years, and although dangerous game is his specialty, plains game is just as important. His son also works with him, who is an accomplished PH in his own right.
This outfitter hunts the famous Selous Game Reserve in the southeastern part of the country. At nearly 35,000 square miles of wilderness, it is the largest safari area in Tanzania, if not all of Africa, and is totally uninhabited by both people and livestock. The Selous is crossed by a number of rivers such as the Rufiji, Ruaha and Kilombero, and is noted for its large population of buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena, elephant, crocodile, hippo sable, roan, waterbuck, wildebeest, zebra, hartebeest, bushbuck and a wide variety of other antelope. It is perhaps the most scenic of all the hunting areas in the country.
For certain local plains game species, they also hunt the Maasailand, a magical area near Mt. Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania, and for a mix of opportunities, they also hunt a vast area bordering the Ruaha National Park in central Tanzania. All hunts are entirely “fair chase”.
“I’ve hunted with him 7 times for various plains game and buffalo. They have all been good hunts. He is completely honest and takes complete care of clients. The camps and food are great (the tent camps may as well be cabins they are so nice!). I’ve taken my wife, son, and best friend. Great trophy quality. I wouldn’t hunt with anyone else.” – Richard M.
The hunting terrain varies between open grassland to dense bush. The vegetation is mainly miombo and mopane bush, with dense thickets, open plains and a wide variety of large trees and thick bush along the riverine areas. You may be required to walk in a sandy dry river bed or up and down numerous hills in your chase for buffalo or elephant. Your ability to walk a long way over difficult terrain may increase your chances of success substantially.
PRICING 2023-2024 (all prices are in USD and are subject to change without notice until deposit received)
As is the case with most safari operators in Africa, pricing is composed of either a base daily rate or a package price based on a set number of days and the species to be pursued, with trophy fees for all species actually taken then added to the cost of either option. We like this pricing structure because you only pay for those species that you bag, and there is lots of incentive for the PH to put you on game.

ACCOMMODATIONS
You will be hosted in a luxury East African tented camp located in the wild African bush and well away from humanity. The canvas tents have comfortable beds, en-suite flush toilets and hot water shower. A complete staff insures that all of your needs will be satisfied.
Excellent cuisine is prepared by private chefs, including seafood and game shot on safari. Bottled water, sodas, juices and beer are available. They also offer a daily laundry service and a satellite telephone is available.
GETTING THERE
If hunting in the Selous Game Reserve, your airport of destination is going to be Dar es Salaam. If you are hunting in Maasailand, you will fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport between Moshi and Arusha. Check KLM, Emirates and Turkish Airlines for flights. From there, the outfitter will transport you to camp by air. If an overnight in hotel is required, expect to pay about $350/night, plus about $50 for local transport.
Tanzania requires visitor visas for most nationalities. The U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens obtain visas before traveling, but visas are also available at ports of entry upon arrival (although there can be long lineups). A passport valid for a minimum of six months beyond visa issuance and/or date of entry, and at least one blank visa page is required.
SIGHTSEEING
While in Tanzania, why not take the opportunity to enjoy some of Africa’s most breathtaking scenery on a photographic safari, either before or after your hunt (we normally recommend before)? We can put you in contact with a safari operator to see the world famous Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater and Mt. Kilimanjaro. The exotic island of Zanzibar is only a 15-minutes flight from Dar es Salaam and also well worth a visit. Please note that such trips from are not possible while in the hunting camp due to the remoteness of the hunting area.
